Background
Netflix has been experiencing a period of growth and transformation in its Paris offices. Alongside this momentum came a growing awareness of the environmental impact of its operations and the desire to engage employees more meaningfully in climate-friendly practices.
Context
Though not driven by any legal obligation, the Netflix team initiated a voluntary approach to better understand their environmental impact. They had already started implementing actions like installing water fountains, distributing reusable water bottles and optimizing lighting systems. Still, they felt the need to reinforce their efforts with reliable, external data to help raise awareness internally and guide further actions.
Carbometrix’ role
Our climate consultants at Carbometrix calculated the carbon footprint of Netflix's Paris offices and developed a tailor-made employee survey. The goal: raise awareness and engagement through relevant, easy-to-understand data and personalized climate insights. We adapted the content and format to Netflix's specific operations. The survey explored employee habits - from food choices to energy use - and directly linked those habits to decarbonization opportunities. Our team also supported Netflix with accessible, actionable insights. For instance, we emphasized that shifting from beef to chicken already represents a major step in reducing emissions - making climate action more tangible and attainable for staff. Not everyone is ready to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle - and that’s perfectly understandable. However, it remains essential for many people to take meaningful steps to reduce the carbon footprint of their diets. Starting small is absolutely fine. In fact, widespread adoption of modest changes can be far more impactful than a small group striving for perfection in their climate efforts.
Outcome of the collaboration
Employees found the survey engaging and relatable. It served as a learning moment, helping teams understand their personal environmental footprint and the collective impact of everyday habits at work. Internally, the project helped Netflix enrich its sustainability efforts, while offering a credible reference point for internal dialogue.
Why it matters
At a time when employee engagement is essential to any sustainability strategy, this collaboration illustrates how data-driven insights and personalized communication can catalyze meaningful change. By focusing on education rather than obligation, Netflix was able to initiate a positive dynamic of climate awareness and action - one grounded in credible metrics and concrete recommendations.
